If you want to increase your company’s visibility, increase sales and Return on Investment (ROI), then you need to get tweeting and posting. However, it can be overwhelming if you are a social media newbie to know where to start. This list will guide you through the veritable list of social media tools and how to maximise your efforts to your organisation’s advantage.

Given below are the six steps to social media A.C.T.I.O.N : –

  • Step 1 – Activate – Choose a Social Media Site(s) – e.g : Facebook or Twitter
One of the biggest challenges you will face as a relative newbie is deciding on which social media site(s) to use for your organisation. But the real question that you need to ask yourself is – What do you want to gain out of social media for your business? What type of business are you in? And what is your target market?
In order to ensure quick Return on Investment (ROI), you need to pick the social media sites that are easy to use and use them as a learning tool to get involved with social media for your business. You are now probably wondering how to select the social media site(s) that are best suited to you. The graphic on the side might help give you a clearer understanding.
While these Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn remain the top three social media networking sites.  Other sites such as YouTube, Flickr and Foursquare can also help increase your organisation’s visibility and leads. The key to success is to not use all the platforms all at once but to take it one step at a time.
  • Step 2 – Connect – Your Market Place – Customers/Suppliers/Biz Network
One of the biggest advantages of social media is that when it comes to connecting with others the possibilities are endless. When connecting with people and companies via social media, one of the most important points to bear in mind is that it is always easier to connect with people you know than people you don’t know.
Social media is a referral marketing place.  Your company’s financial success depends on your ability to connect and build relationships with others. Remember the reason you have business is because of other people.
  • Step 3 – Test – Role Models – Learn and Ask Questions
Prior to beginning a serious social media campaign for your company it is better to learn from other more experienced users of social media. Model your internet marketing tactics and campaigns. You need to partner with complimentary businesses and industries and partner with them and help them expand their business and they will in return do the same for you. You scratch their backs and they will scratch yours.
  • Step 4 – Innovation – Share your Activities – use Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic
Like any business you are looking to grow your brand and your business; you need to grow your social media network. The size and strength of your fan base will help with the distribution of your brand.  In order to attract the audience you need to appeal to the senses that they use online. Use images and videos generously and don’t just rely on text.
  • Step 5 – Open up – Give benefits to the readers – About your products & services
Share your company’s activities in a way that involves the audience and helps add value to their lives. In order to monetise the relationships that you form over social media you need to keep the audience interested in your activities all the time.  So don’t be afraid to be bold and innovative on social media. While over promoting yourself on social media is generally not advis
able, you can still take about your products and services, the benefits and your significant achievements.
  • Step 6 – Network – Share others’ Activities
If you are looking to be competitive and creative online, then you need to be open about your company’s activities and services. You need to find new ways to engage with your customers and create brand loyalty. The social media network needs to be used to let customers form an emotional connection with your brand. This is in turn will increase your corporate image and multiply your return on investment (ROI). If you need tips on how to network and share, take a look at what some of the big companies like Coke, Starbucks, Kraft, etc., are doing to engage with their audience.

These are the basics six steps that you need to follow in order to get a foot hold into social media. While there are no hard and fast rules, the successful companies all have a similar strategy of engaging with the customer. A study done by Wetpaint/Altimeter on the top 100 global brands and their social media strategy introduced one single criterion for social media success – ENGAGEMENT.

The DbReport put out by the study correlates social media engagement to financial activity, industries, performance and much more. So regardless of which steps or strategies you follow, make sure customer engagement is the cornerstone for your social media campaign. This will ensure you never go wrong.

The ultimate deciding factor is going to be not the steps you followed, but how much you engaged your customer and how quickly you were able to build a loyal fan base. This will be directly reflected in your Profit and Loss Sheet at the end of the financial year.
