Founded in 2005, over the period of 7 years YouTube has become the world’s second largest search engine – after Google.

You Tube is primarily a web based video streaming and sharing website where users can share, view, upload and comment on online videos.

As an internet user, we have all in some shape or form used YouTube and basically know our way around YouTube and how we can utilise. But have we really considered how it can be used for business? Prior to listing tips or tricks on how YouTube can be used for business purposes, lets recap on what we can do using YouTube.

Using YouTube we can: –

  • Post and Tag videos
  • Watch videos posted by others
  • Search for video content through keywords or category
  • Embed YouTube hosted videos on web pages such as blogs, company websites, etc.,
  • Drive Community Engagement through comments, ratings and sharing.

Armed with this background information, lets now look at how we can increase the visibility of our corporate YouTube videos or advertisements.

Prior to posting a new video on YouTube, take a few minutes to address the following: –

  1. Title: Just like with newspapers, the title of your video is what will grab user attention and generate interest.
  2. Description: Provide a short and precise explanation of your video. This will allow viewers to distinguish your video from others.
  3. Keywords/Tags: This will help the viewers search for your video.
  4. Category: Select the group classification of video.
  5. Thumbnail Image: The image that will help the viewers identify your video within search results.
  6. Video Location: Once you upload your video, it allows you to set the location where the video was recorded. Using this feature, you can also restrict the search results of your video from certain locations.
  7. Playlists: Create a playlist of your videos categorised topically.

After adding your video to YouTube, there are few other actions that you can look into, to enhance the popularity of your video: –

  • Create a custom YouTube channel that is unique to your organisation or business. Add all videos to this channel.
  • Design a branded YouTube background, to ensure brand recognition of your channel.
  • Use YouTube’s Keyword Tool – This tool is extremely useful to find new phrases and relevant keywords to promote your videos.
  • Create a call to action overlay – this is an extremely handy feature to drive traffic back to your website. Basically, you need to add a pop up footer banner that appears ten seconds into the video and 10 seconds from the end of the video.
  • Track the performance of your video using YouTube Insight. This is a free tool that provides statistical and analytical information on your video.

Now that we have covered how YouTube can be utilised successfully for business, you may be wondering what kind of innovative YouTube campaign will work for you! Here are some of the most successful viral video campaigns : –

  1. BlendTec – Will it Blend? – Sales for the company have grown by 500% after the release of these videos
  2. America’s Got Talent – Audition videos can be sent directly from home to the dedicated YouTube channel.
  3. Best Job in the World – The Australian government created a dedicated page where applicants for the caretaker of the Great Barrier Reef, were asked to post why they were perfect for the job.
