Looks like September and October are months of change for leading social media platforms. A few weeks back Twitter announced some heavy duty changes to its profile.
Together with this Facebook style cover image, Twitter also introduced a brand new iPad app. With all these changes taking place, we thought it’s a good time to revisit the basics of Twitter and why it is one of the top three must have social media platforms for any business.
The Network
Studies say that Twitter now has over half a billion users and over 140 million active users. If you are looking for word of mouth marketing, this is as good as it gets. Your current customers, future customers are already on Twitter or know someone who is on Twitter. This is crowd sourced marketing at its best!
The Conversation
Conversations on Twitter are headline style with keywords indicated by the use of a hashtag (#). You need to look for current trending topics and relate them to your business.
The AFL is currently trending in Australia. Virgin Atlantic was bang on trend and they found a way to relate it to their business. You need to look at innovative ways in which you can capitalise on current trends for your business. Be a part of the conversation!
The Connection
Create your own hashtag; something that symbolises your business and its core values. Coca Cola has made the happiness hashtag its own and has successfully related a human emotion to the brand, through its open happiness theme. Now, every time we are happy, we make an association with Coke.
The Norms
Twitter users are already familiar with certain traditions. Fridays are for thanking followers (#FF), RT means Re Tweet, FTW means For The Win. Make use of these existing keywords and norms, to set the expectation among your audience. While you are at it, create an innovative new tradition of your own.
The Community
Always remember that you are part of a larger community. So your tweets should not always be about you, your brand and your business. Encourage users to post photos, tell their personal connections with your brand. Post jokes, puzzles, photos and other interesting topics, that contribute back to the community and in turn drive engagement to your page.
In sport, the commentators always mention that the team that gets the basics right wins the game. The same applies for business and social media marketing; if you get your basics right, you will be able to increase interaction, drive engagement and maximise on your ROI. So keep tweeting consistently and remember to be on trend, on time!
